300,000 New Homes per Year
300,000 is the number of new homes the UK Government wants every year as of the mid 2020’s.
However, the method set out to achieve this target is flawed, according to the National Audit Office (NAO).
All local authorities must provide a 5-year plan for building new homes, this is the Law. If there is no plan, local developers end up confused about where and what they can build, which slows down the whole process.
117,000 is the average number of new homes that were built between years 2005 – 2018, according to the NAO. The number never raised above 224,000.
The NAO want the Government to regularly monitor the gap between the target and what is actually being delivered. It also thinks the current planning system is not working well, and that local developers should be given more guidance on how they can contribute.
